September 1796 Hamilton Ross arrived with his regiment (1). September 1798 'we had next the elopement of young frow(sic) Van den Berg with Capt. Hamilton Ross, a young man of very good character who had made fair and honourable proposals which the father objected to, having a right to keep her fortunes till she was 18, if she married without his consent, meantime his own wife died and he informed his daughter he meant for a mother in law (stepmother) a person who had been in habit of whipping her, and who had a son who was intended for her husband - she told him if he did, she would marry Mr Ross' (Lady A Barnard)(156). 1798 the Scotch Brigade sailed for India (5).
January 1799 marriage (Fort St George, Madras) of H R and Catharina Elisabeth d.o. J J van den Berg (156). Hamilton Ross returned to the Cape in 1801 with 81st Foot; retired on half pay 1803.
