Notes - Samuel grew up on the farm "Perdekop" in the Ficksburg District. As child he often accompanied his father who, apart from being a farmer, also did transport work to the diamond diggings at Kimberley. Later on his father, Izak Jacobus bought the farm "Vergenoeg", in the Winburg district where he farmed. Samuel went to school in Winburg approximatedly 5 miles from the farm until std 5. Everyday he walked to and from school. His teacher was a Mr Fivaz. One day a girl had to receive a hiding for one or other offence and Samuel offered to take her place. Mr Fivaz then proceeded to give both a hiding.
Izak Jacobus later bought the farm "Dankbaarsfontein" also in the Winburg district. Samuel started to work in the Postoffice until 1925 when he was declared medically unfit as a result of a stomach ulcer. His pension was 11 Pounds per month with a cost of living allowance added after WW2 which he received until his death in 1963.Whilst in Kroonstad the family lived in Hill Street.
After his medical board Samuel started to farm first on his brother in law, Andries Pienaar's farm "Withuis" and later, in 1933, on his own farm "Liversage" adjacent to the family Farm "Dankbaarsfontein".
