79 Christiaan by occupation a teacher in Colesberg, left South Africa in 1905 as a member of Trek IV for Argentina with his wife "Bettie" and daughter, Johanna Petronella on the ship Highland Fling.
In late 1905 the Highland Fling arrived in Cape Town with a load of mules from Argentina and was refurbished and changed into an immigrant ship within a few days. Although the space was sufficient to transport the 322 people the smell remained and lingered for the duration of the voyage.
The Highland Fling left Cape Town for Buenos Aires on October 21, 1905. After 17 days in the Spanish-speaking City the imigrants boarded the Presidente Roca for Chubut. Even though they travelled third class living conditions were much improved. They arrived in Comodoro Rivadavia on December 5, 1903, more than two months after they left their homes in various parts of South Africa. (B du Toit: Colonia Boer, p 121-123)
Christiaan died soon after their arrival in Commodoro Rivadavia of typhoid.
